After Oh Yoanna's Death, MBC Axes Freelance Weathercaster System; Geum Chaerim Bids Farewell After Oh Yoanna's Death, MBC Axes Freelance Weathercaster System; Geum Chaerim Bids Farewell 등록일2026.02.09 The fallout from the death of Oh Yoanna, who had spoken up about workplace bullying, has led MBC to retire its weathercaster system. As a result, all of MBC's freelance weathercasters ― including her peer Geum Chaerim ― have exited after their contracts ended. On February. 8, Geum posted on her social media, “Last Friday (the 6th) was my final day delivering the weather as a weathercaster.” She added, “I have no regrets because I did my best every broadcast during nearly five years at MBC, but I'm left with sadness and a heavy heart as the job I loved disappears.” In September last year, MBC officially abolished its freelance weathercaster system. The program, which had been in place for 31 years, came to an end and shifted to hiring experienced “weather and climate experts” as staff. On the newly launched “MBC News 25,” anchors now deliver brief weather updates without a separate weathercaster. Oh Yoanna passed away on Sept. 15, 2024, at age 28. A note roughly 17 pages long was found on her phone, reportedly describing severe distress caused by workplace bullying. The bereaved family named a senior colleague, identified as A, along with several weathercasters, as perpetrators. However, following a special audit in May last year, MBC determined that only A among the four named individuals was at fault and terminated A's contract. The family is currently pursuing a civil damages suit of 510 million won against A. (SBS Entertainment News | Kang Kyung-youn)
I-DLE Earns First Terrestrial No. 1 with 'Mono,' Sweeps Three Music Shows I-DLE Earns First Terrestrial No. 1 with 'Mono,' Sweeps Three Music Shows 등록일2026.02.09 I-DLE signaled the return of a “queen” era, sweeping three music shows. On the Feb. 8 broadcast of SBS's Inkigayo, wrapped promotions for their digital single “Mono (Feat. skaiwater).” Over two weeks, the track drew praise across music, performance, and content, closing out a new chapter. I-DLE took back-to-back wins on Mnet's M Countdown (Feb. 5), KBS2's Music Bank (Feb. 6), and SBS's Inkigayo (Feb. 8), proving the song's heat. This marks the group's first time reaching No. 1 on a terrestrial music show with a digital single, and fan support helped them clinch a triple crown. Their self-produced content also caught fire. After a buzzed-about mega crew performance video, the group surprise-dropped a character-themed dance video to celebrate their wins―and it took off. Leaning into a “black-and-white” concept, the members' bold transformations delivered plenty of laughs. Charts rose in tandem with the TV run. The song held No. 1 on YouTube Korea's Trending Music and Trending Music Videos, while streams kept climbing on domestic platforms like Melon―hinting at long-term hit potential following “Fate.” Their impact in the Chinese-speaking market stood out, too. They topped QQ Music's Digital Album Best-Seller Weekly Chart for two straight weeks and held firm at No. 1 on Tencent Music's Korea chart. On QQ Music's music video chart, even “Mono (Feat. skaiwater)” broadcast clips lined up in succession, an unusual feat. UK outlet CLASH praised “Mono (Feat. skaiwater)” for its “emotion that reveals the beauty of space and groove.” US pop culture magazine Stardust lauded its “intentional minimalism,” adding that by “pulling back,” the song leaves more room for the members' vocals and unique colors, ultimately becoming a hopeful anthem built on self-acceptance and solidarity. With a triple crown under their belt, I-DLE will kick off their world tour with “2026 i-dle WORLD TOUR [Syncopation] IN SEOUL” at KSPO DOME in Songpa-gu, Seoul, on Feb. 21?22. A newly arranged setlist of hits and the group's commanding performances promise special memories. The tour continues at Taipei Dome on March 7, where tickets sold out all seats right after sales opened. Additional cities and dates will be announced later. I Wanted to Make It Feel like Family ―G-DRAGON Draws 40,000 to His First-Ever Solo Fan Meeting I Wanted to Make It Feel like Family ―G-DRAGON Draws 40,000 to His First-Ever Solo Fan Meeting 등록일2026.02.09 G-DRAGON staged his first solo fan meeting since debut, uniting roughly 40,000 fans over three days and cementing the multi-generational “FAM” as one true family. From February 6 to 8, he met fans at KSPO DOME in Olympic Park, Songpa-gu, Seoul, with 2026 G-DRAGON 'FAM' MEETING [FAM+ILY : FAMILY : FAM I LOVE YOU]. More than a simple meetup, it became a moment that bridged time and generations for his fandom. What made it special was the wide spectrum of fans in the room. Newly arrived teens―he's even been dubbed Korea's “president of teens,” a buzzy nickname for stars wildly popular with younger audiences―stood side by side with fans who grew up during BIGBANG's prime and are now in midlife. Different generations cheered the same songs and laughed and cried at the same moments, coming together as one family under the name G-DRAGON. For his first-ever solo fan meeting, G-DRAGON went beyond a standard show and aimed for an intimate family gathering. A 360-degree open stage, pathways designed for eye contact, and a setlist that moved between memories and the present all spotlighted his sincerity toward each individual fan. Across the three days, the emotions deepened. It wasn't a one-off event―it felt like an answer to the time they've shared and a promise for the future they'll build together. The roaring energy, strong enough to make everyone forget the winter cold, proved G-DRAGON remains an icon in real time. YouTuber Mimiminu, who's long said G-DRAGON is his reason for being, served as MC―living out a true “successful fan” moment. His easy back-and-forth and heartfelt empathy with G-DRAGON kept the room light and warm. During reflections and messages from FAMs, he got choked up alongside the crowd, leaving a lasting impression. From opening to encore, the stage zeroed in on fans' memories. Riding in on a massive crown, G-DRAGON kicked things off with A Boy, instantly heating up the dome. For WHO YOU?, he recreated his 2013 Inkigayo look―white shirt, blue jeans, and a red ball cap―sending fans into a frenzy. The finale with TAKE ME and IBELONGIIU from his recent album Ubermensch wrapped the flow naturally and left a deep afterglow. At the heart of the night was conversation between G-DRAGON and his FAM. They laughed over old photos. He answered pre-submitted questions on the spot, showing an unfiltered, human side. His quick wit bounced between empathy and humor, winning over the room. He also ran mini games to give away a slew of gifts he'd prepared himself―true reverse fan-service that amped up the heat. During challenge time, he nailed fan-favorite challenges. For OVERDRIVE. ―he unleashed peak charm, sending the venue into chaos. He snapped accessories on and off and played with props, clearly having a blast, which only made the cheers louder. Chants of “Kwon Ji-yong!” rang out as the event flowed less like a performance and more like shared play. Immersive details brought G-DRAGON's universe to life. Before entry, the venue exterior transformed into a Daisy Garden concept to welcome fans, and walnut cookies stamped with daisies were handed out―turning things into a festival even before showtime. Mid-show, video cues made it feel like everyone was riding an “88th-floor elevator” inside his world. A cheeky etiquette video featured security staff sharing safety rules. And at the end, confetti printed with G-DRAGON's handwriting fell through the air with his signature scent, wrapping the space in his touch. These touches turned the fan meeting from a “show you watch” into a “world you experience.” G-DRAGON said, “After my comeback, I welcomed new family members and wanted to hold a fan meeting. I felt sorry for those who couldn't join the tour, so I wanted to create something like a family gathering. It was a time straight off my wishlist, and sharing it together made it even better. I love you.” He added, “Our first official family gathering ran for three days, and it was a time of becoming one again. Spring is coming soon, so please rest a bit along the flower path and wait for me.” Finally, he shared, “BIGBANG will make a 20th-anniversary comeback this year. As a member and as a fan, I'm excited, and I think all the members feel the same,” expressing his anticipation. After the event, SNS and community boards lit up with reactions like “An all-time fan meeting where you can feel the heart in every detail,” “Stage, talk, production, and gifts―every inning was a hit,” “He showed everything fans wanted to see,” and “This is how amazing Ji-yong is,” praising his famously warm, considerate side. G-DRAGON will continue his solo fan meeting 2026 G-DRAGON 'FAM' MEETING [FAM+ILY : FAMILY : FAM I LOVE YOU] at PIA ARENA MM in Yokohama, Japan, from February 13 to 15, and at BITEC in Bangkok, Thailand, on February 21 and 22, to meet local fans. 'Squid Game' Director Hwang Dong-hyuk Tapped for 19th Asian Film Awards Masterclass 'Squid Game' Director Hwang Dong-hyuk Tapped for 19th Asian Film Awards Masterclass 등록일2026.02.06 ' Squid Game ' director Hwang Dong-hyuk has been invited to the Masterclass at the 19th Asian Film Awards. Set for Sunday, March 15, in Hong Kong, the 19th Asian Film Awards unveiled its Masterclass lineup. The event will host Hwang Dong-hyuk of the global-sensation Netflix series Squid Game , acclaimed auteur Jia Zhangke―who has triumphed at all three of the world's major film festivals―and actor Zhang Ziyi, whose presence has resonated far beyond Asia. Together, they'll lead special masterclasses for film fans. This Masterclass series spotlights three creators at the top of their fields―series creation, auteur-driven filmmaking, and acting. Each will personally walk audiences through their own body of work. In Squid Game , Hwang Dong-hyuk reimagined childhood games as chilling survival trials. Beyond its hook, the series turned themes of class and despair into a visually bold, instantly readable narrative that sparked a worldwide reaction. Its simple yet ruthless rules, daring color palette, and spatial design ratcheted up the tension and left a lasting impact. Before Squid Game , Hwang built a wide-ranging filmography from the social drama Silenced to the comedy Miss Granny. His session will trace that creative journey and examine how years of experience and relentless questioning shaped stories that connect across cultures and languages. Jia Zhangke is a leading figure of China's Sixth Generation cinema. Known for restrained realism, he has quietly but precisely captured life in a changing China over decades. From Xiao Wu to Platform to Still Life, his films expand everyday stories into universal narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide. A regular invitee to Venice, Cannes, and Berlin, Jia will share his creative philosophy―how close observation evolves into storytelling, and how restrained direction builds emotion on screen. Zhang Ziyi, one of China's defining actors, has showcased range and presence from The Road Home to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and other global projects. Over more than 20 years, she has refused to be boxed into a single image, establishing herself as an actor judged purely by her craft. Even across different languages and production systems, Zhang Ziyi has always centered the character. Her masterclass will revisit key works and explore how she prepares for complex roles, faces public attention, and maintains high artistic standards over time. It will offer insight not only into acting, but also into building sustained presence on the international film stage. Spanning directing and acting, and bridging film and series creation, this Masterclass lineup promises a panoramic look at contemporary cinema's momentum and expansion through three distinct perspectives. Their different experiences, languages, and creative methods will help audiences see the art of film in richer dimension. The 19th Asian Film Awards will take place on Sunday, March 15, at the Xiqu Centre in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District. (SBS Entertainment News | Kim Ji-hye)
